The Garden Town
1804 - 2008
205 Years of Progress

The site for the new settlement of Uitenhage was chosen in 1804 because of its central location, its abundant supply of clean water and the welcoming climate. Today, the town is
a hive of industrial activity and the hub of one of the most diverse ecotourism regions in the world.

Uitenhage is situated in the Eastern Cape, on the Zwartkops River. It is an industrial center, with large railroad workshops, wool washeries, textile mills, and motor vehicle assembly plants. The town also serves as the commercial center for the surrounding agricultural region amd it has excellent telecommunications, commercial, banking, residential, educational, health, sport and recreational infrastructure.

It is equidistant to all major international markets and is strategically situated with excellent road and rail links to the rest of Southern Africa.Uitenhage is 15 miles from the Coega Industrial Development Zone and 21 miles from the Port Elizabeth

Uitenhage is ideally poised to take advantage of the expanding tourism industry in the region.

Luxury beachfront hotels, some of the world's premier surfing resorts, the Addo Elephant Park and many Game Reserves where the Big 5 can be viewed in a malaria free environment, hunting lodges, the mountainous Groendal and Baviaanskloof wilderness areas, the Van Stadens Wild Flower Reserve, and major citrus, game and livestock fanning districts can all be experienced within a 60km radius of down town. Uitenhage is surrounded by hunting and Game farms and Game parks.

Uitenhage is a gateway to the spectacular Garden Route, which passes through some of South Africa's most magnificent coasta areasl, Tsitsikamma National Park and rain forest scenery, and to the rugged and beauty of the Karoo.
The Garden Route has a Mediterranean Maritime climate, with moderately hot summers, and mild to chilly winters. It is one of the richest rainfall areas, most of which occurs in the winter months, brought by the humid sea-winds from the Indian ocean. Any time of the year is good for visiting the area
